About this domain

Filed · Last reviewed

This site is Hazard Docket, an independent publication covering gambling law, money and play. It is published at a domain name — njgamblingcourtinitiative.com — that belonged to something else, and that needs saying plainly rather than in small type.

We revise a page when the statute, filing or report behind it changes: if the source is not in front of us, the figure does not go up.

What is on this page
  1. What was here before
  2. What this site is now, and what it is not
  3. Why the old addresses still work
  4. Reading the two kinds of material

What was here before

The domain was used by an advocacy effort for gambling treatment diversion courts in New Jersey: a campaign to have courts divert defendants whose offending was driven by problem gambling into supervised treatment, as drug courts do. It published explanatory material about how such courts work, a roster of individuals who supported the campaign, and a photographic record of the judges and clinicians who built the first such courts.

What this site is now, and what it is not

Hazard Docket has no connection whatsoever with that campaign, with the organisation that ran it, or with any of the individuals who were listed as supporting it. Specifically:

  • Nothing on this site is published by, for, or with the approval of that organisation.
  • No judge, clinician, counsellor, academic, regulator or official named anywhere on this site has reviewed, endorsed, supplied or approved any part of it.
  • No person named in the former roster is an advisor, author, reviewer or associate of this publication, and the roster has been removed for that reason.
  • This publication is not a court, a regulator, a law firm, a treatment provider or a helpline, and it is not affiliated with any of them.
  • Nothing here is legal advice or clinical advice.

Why the old addresses still work

Every page address that existed on this domain still resolves. That is deliberate. Breaking several hundred working links — many of them from courts, councils, academic citations and news archives — in order to tidy up a redesign would destroy the useful part of what was here.

So the explanatory material about gambling treatment diversion courts is kept, on the pages where it was, under its own headings: the account of what such a court is and who is eligible, at About, and the chronology of how the courts were built, at a chronicle of gambling courts. Both are labelled as the earlier record rather than presented as this publication's reporting.

What has been removed is the identity, not the information: the organisation's name as an actor, its postal address, the roster of individuals, the portrait photographs of living private people, and their personal contact links. In their place stands an institutional map of the field, at who does the work.

Reading the two kinds of material

Pages carry a review date, and the material falls into two kinds. The earlier advocacy material argues a case; where this site keeps it, the argument is attributed to those who made it rather than asserted as ours. Our own reporting makes no case at all: it states what a document says, names the document, and stops. Where a claim could not be sourced, the page says so instead of rounding it off.

The Hazard Docket deskGambling law, money and play

This page is written and kept up to date by the desk. Before anything goes up we check three things: that every figure carries the filing, statute or report that fixes it; that every date carries the document it comes from; and that every procedure is described the way the body that runs it describes it. We do not rate operators, we are not paid to list anyone, and where we have no source the field stays empty and we say so.
